Cozying Up: Transforming Your Home into a Winter Haven

As winter approaches, we all start to look at ways we can make our home more cosy and inviting as the cold weather sets in.  The trees are well on the way to losing all their leaves, and colours outside are more muted.  So what’s the best way to create a haven to hibernate and relax in your home this winter? Check out these 5 ideas below:-

Layer up with Natural Fibers and Textures.

Embrace the art of layering by adding soft and natural textiles throughout your space.

Add pillows and blankets onto your sofas, chairs and bed so that you can really snuggle in on those cold nights.

Swap out lightweight summer throws for chunky knit fabrics or luxuriously soft merino blankets. Textiles not only add warmth, but they also introduce texture and visual interest to your interior.

Don't forget to extend this warmth to the floor by swapping summer rugs for thicker, cozier options.

Ambient Light.

As the days get shorter and the number of daylight hours decrease, lighting plays a crucial role.  A space may benefit from having an additional ambient lighting source such as a floor lamp or table lamp to create a cozy glow.

Consider switching cool white bulbs for warmer tones to infuse your space with a comforting atmosphere. Additionally, candles can add a cosy vibe; try adding soy candles scented with musky woody tones to enhance your experience.

Wintery Décor.

Being in the southern hemisphere, it’s not really suitable to crack out the Christmas decorations and adorn the house, but try bringing in wintery foliage like branches or dried floral arrangements to infuse your space with seasonal charm

Earthy hues such as deep greens, warm brown and soft neutrals create a soothing and grounding atmosphere that evokes a sense of coziness.

Internal Heat.

Never overlook the importance of heat from within.  A wood fire not only provides sufficient warmth even on the coldest of days, but it provides an ambience that just epitomises winter coziness.

If a wood-fire isn’t feasible, there are a number of other options available such as electric fires, gas heaters, heat pumps and wall/floor heaters which give off warmth.

Consider upgrading to double-glazed windows to minimize heat loss and maximize energy efficiency, especially in older homes with single glazing.

Create a Special Nook.

Find that place in your home where you can set up a special corner or nook where you can unwind and just relax.  Layer a comfy chair up with pillows and blankets near a window or a fireplace.  Add in a little side table to hold books, candles or a steaming cup of tea and create a tranquil retreat for reading, meditating or simply enjoying a moment for yourself.
