Escape to Comfort: Creating Your Ideal Guest Bedroom Retreat.
Have a feeling that your friends would rather not come stay at your house because your guest bedroom is just looking a bit old or tired?
Creating a guest bedroom doesn’t need to be expensive; it just takes a few thoughtful touches to make it special.
Check out the following tips below to help create a Guest Bedroom retreat which will wow your guests.
Bed & Bedding.
The most important thing is to have a comfortable bed! Generally speaking, a queen size bed is a good size for a guest bedroom, but if the space allows, why not upgrade to a kingsize to give your guests the royal treatment!?
To make your comfortable bed look inviting, use quality bedlinen. Organic cotton and/or linen is a great option, and there are many great suppliers here in NZ. Check out Foxtrot Home, George Collective and A&C homestore to name a few.
Layer it Up.
A bed always looks more inviting when it has layers. So layer the pillows, and layer a blanket – it adds dimension and says “come relax”.
A good way to look at pillows, is start with 2 thicker/more dense pillows at the back, and 2 softer sleeping pillows at the front. From here you can add in Euro pillows at the back to add height, and you can add a decorative pillow or 2 at the front. Just remember that your guests are going to need somewhere to put the pillows when not in use, so don’t overload if you’re short on space!
Beside & Below.
Bedside tables need to be a practical height so that it’s easy to reach whatever they choose to place on it, and unless you have pendant bedside lights, it needs to be big enough to hold a bedside light and leave them some space for personal items. Extra points for providing them with a charging point next to the bed to charge devices.
Think about the flooring and what they step will step on as soon as they get out of bed. If you’re floors are a hard material such as wood, engineered wood, or tile; consider placing a rug which extends past the edges of the bed, so they have a warm soft material to step down onto – or maybe you will go the extra mile and provide them with slippers for their stay!
Storage Space.
Provide amble storage space for their belongings. Clear out a closet for them to hang their things, and clear out a drawer they can use during their stay. If you’re tight on space, try find them somewhere they can store their suitcase in their room, and easily access it as needed.
Décor & Styling.
Decorate it in a neutral calming style to appeal to a wider audience. Having a calm space, also allows them a space to retreat to after a busy day out and about with you. Adding pops of colour into décor pieces and soft furnishings makes it easier to change out as seasons change, or as you feel like! It’s a lot easier to change out small décor pieces than paint a whole room.
Lighting.
Lighting- A main room light needs to provide enough light for your guests to be able to see what they’re doing, however, you also don’t want to blind them. Think about adding a warm dimmable light, so that they can adjust to their own preferences. As mentioned above – also add a bedside light, which they can switch on and off from bed.
The Extra’s.
Here’s your chance to really go the extra mile and give your guest a special experience- here’s some ideas on how you can achieve this:
- Fresh cold water in a sealed jug with a glass next to their bed on a dresser.
- Bathrobes and slippers available for their stay
- A welcome note and/or gift on their bed for arrival
- Toiletries available for their use during their stay.
Creating a comfortable yet stylish guest bedroom isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating an inviting space where your guests feel welcome and that they can just relax. By combining thoughtful design choices with practical amenities, you can ensure that your guests not only want to come stay… but they might not want to leave!!
From luxurious bedding, to personalized touches, every detail plays a role in making your guest bedroom a beautiful retreat.
