Modern Organic Dining: 5 Tips for a Harmonious and Relaxed Dining Space

Creating a harmonious and relaxed dining space is essential for enjoying meals with family and friends.  A well-designed dining area can be the perfect backdrop to share stories and create life long memories.  If you’re looking to create a tranquil and harmonious dining space with a modern organic design, here are 5 key tips to help you achieve that perfect balance.

Layout/Flow.

This is the most important factor to consider when designing a dining space.  You need enough space to allow for easy movement around the table and chairs.  Pay special attention to the proportion and height of the table in relation to your chairs.  Ideally, the distance between the chair seat and the table top should range between 24cm – 30cm.  Most modern chairs have a seat height around 50cm from the floor while dining tables typically stand at approximately 76cm high.

The shape of your room should guide your choice of table shape.  For smaller spaces, a round or oval table may be more suitable, offering better flow and more flexible seating.  Bench seating can also be a great space-saving option.

Comfortable Seating.

Comfort is key when creating a relaxed dining space.  Choose dining chairs with padded seats or upholstered cushions to make sure guests are comfortable during meals (although wooden or plastic chairs can be easier to clean if you have young children!).  Consider adding throw pillows or seat cushions for an added layer of comfort.

Ambient Lighting.

Lighting can significantly impact the mood and atmosphere of a space.  Opt for soft, ambient lighting to create a warm and inviting environment.  Use a pendant light with a dimmer switch over the table as a feature piece, or use dimmable wall sconces to adjust the level of brightness to suit the occasion.
Harsh or direct light can be uncomfortable, so aim for a soft glow that enhances the overall ambience, just make sure your diners can see what they are eating.

Natural materials.

A key element of modern organic design is adding in natural materials, and what better place to do it than in your dining room to help create a sense of connection to the outdoors.  Use furniture made from materials such as wood, stone, or rattan to not only add warmth to the room but also add to a harmonious and relaxing atmosphere.

Furniture selections.

The furniture you choose for your dining space plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming environment, where you and your friends/family will want to sit down and enjoy meals and quality time together.  Select pieces that complement your overall design aesthetic to contribute to a sense of unity.
Choose a table which is proportionate to the size of the room so that it sits comfortably in the space.

Consider adding a mix of seating options such as chairs and benches to create visual interest.
